Learning opportunities sometimes arrive when we least expect them!

Today, a colony of bees settled in our playground. After ensuring students remained at a safe distance, we contacted a local beekeeper who generously came to safely relocate the swarm.

What began as a safety concern quickly became an authentic learning experience. Students had the opportunity to learn about how bees communicate and work together, the role of the queen and worker bees, and why pollinators are essential to healthy ecosystems and food production. They also discovered that swarming is a natural part of a bee colony's life cycle and that swarming bees are often focused on finding a new home rather than being aggressive.

Experiences like this remind us that some of the most powerful learning happens when we connect directly with the world around us. Through place-based learning, students develop curiosity, ask meaningful questions, and gain a deeper understanding of the local environment and the interconnected systems that support life in our community.

A sincere thank you to our local beekeeper for sharing her expertise and helping turn an unexpected visitor into a memorable learning opportunity.
