As part of Take Me Outside Week, Mrs. Varney’s class stepped outdoors to explore how we can learn from the land by listening carefully—just like deer do. Students practiced using “deer ears” to tune into the natural sounds around them, noticing how focusing quietly helps reveal layers of life we often miss: the rustle of leaves, a bird’s call, the hum of insects, and even the sound of wind moving through trees. After listening, they created sound maps to record what they heard, showing where each sound came from and how it made them feel.
This hands-on experience connected deeply to place-based learning, helping students build awareness of their surroundings and appreciation for the living systems that share our space. Listening like deer strengthened their sense of belonging and curiosity, while sound mapping supported observation, reflection, and connection—all core aspects of the Circle of Courage. Through these activities, students discovered that learning outdoors helps them see, hear, and feel more of the world they are a part of.
