Some dynamic learning and collaboration took place at a recent professional development session titled Better Outside Than In – Outdoor Strategies for Primary, led by Kacie Young and Eileen Bennison at Scout Island. This half-day workshop emphasized how shifting our teaching environment to the outdoors can transform both instruction and student engagement. We explored a variety of Language Arts and Math strategies specifically designed for outdoor learning. Many of these were active and play-based, which naturally align with primary learners' needs for movement, exploration, and sensory engagement. One key takeaway was how responsive students become when given the space to move, explore, and learn through play. We also had a chance to collaborate with colleagues and share our favourite outdoor teaching strategies.
