CCSD27 Emergency Response Procedures for Schools

In the event of an emergency, schools can be placed under an “emergency action” or status to ensure the security and safety of students and staff:

  • Hold & Secure
  • Shelter in Place
  • Lockdown
  • Evacuate
  • Drop, Cover & Hold On

Drills take place at schools regularly to ensure familiarity and compliance with emergency procedures.

Notifications of emergency status will be communicated using the following methods:

  • Email
  • CCSD27 Website: https://www.sd27.bc.ca/
  • School Messenger

CCSD27 will work in collaboration with emergency services if an emergent situation arises.

Procedures:

Hold & Secure: In a Hold & Secure the exterior doors are secured while normal activities continue inside the school.  This is used to protect the school occupants from danger in the neighbourhood or community outside the school.  This procedure may also be used during a serious medical situation.

Shelter in Place: Shelter in Place is the action of keeping a hazardous condition outside the school while holding students and staff safely inside the school and may include closing exterior doors, windows and shutting down the ventilation system.  This is typically used in response to an environmental or weather event.

Lockdown: A Lockdown is used to protect the school occupants from an intruder or active threat inside the building.

Evacuate: Situations requiring Evacuation include, but are not limited to, fires, hazardous spills or fumes, floods inside the school, or may be required after a Lockdown or a Drop-Cover-Hold On procedure.  All staff and students must be aware of evacuation routes and designated assembly areas.  School administration must communicate these designated areas to parents and caregivers.

Drop, Cover, and Hold On: A Drop-Cover-Hold On procedure can be used in any emergency event where there is an immediate impact to the building or space being occupied or the displacement of its contents.  This is typically in response to earthquakes and explosions.
