100 Mile Elementary
This spring, from April to June, students in our Sewing Club met every Wednesday and had the privilege of learning from quilters from the Survivors Sewing Club, who generously shared their time, knowledge, and skills. Students began by making tote bags and then used their new sewing skills to create ribbon skirts.
Through this project, students learned about the cultural significance of ribbon skirts and gained a deeper appreciation for Indigenous traditions, identity, and self-expression. Learning alongside community members helped build meaningful relationships and connections.
This project reflects the First Peoples Principles of Learning and supports the BC Curriculum Core Competencies through communication, creative thinking, and personal and social responsibility.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Survivors Sewing Club and to Penny Reid, Indigenous Support Worker, for their guidance, support, and dedication in helping make this meaningful learning experience possible.
