100 Mile Elementary

Our Grade Wolf Pack had an unforgettable winter learning experience at Gavin Lake this week — where the land truly became our best teacher.

Students snowshoed through forest trails, cross-country skied across open stretches, and explored snow science hands-on, discovering how snow insulates the earth, stores water, and changes with temperature and pressure. Each activity showed us how the land teaches movement, resilience, observation, and respect — lessons no classroom can fully replace.

We arrived to blowing snow and strong winds, but just as in nature (and learning!), conditions shifted. By midday the skies brightened and spirits soared, making for perfect outdoor exploration.

The fun didn’t stop after dinner — students enjoyed evening activities that had everyone smiling, from sledding and hockey to sauna time and ping pong, building connection, courage, and lots of laughter.

This powerful experience was made possible through the generosity of our community sponsors, whose support allows our students to learn beyond the walls of the school and deeply connect with the land. We are so grateful.

A true reminder that when we step outside, the land always has something to teach us.
