Tatla Lake Elementary/Junior

Our students had the privilege of learning from local Tsilhqot’in knowledge keeper Skip Gregg during our time in Hagensborg. Around the fireside each evening, Skip shared fascinating knowledge about the history of the area surrounding Tatla Lake and the rich history and traditions of the Tsilhqot’in people.

Students were deeply engaged as they learned about arrowheads and artifacts discovered in traditional gathering places such as Pyper Lake, as well as the archaeology of the region. Skip explained how obsidian from Anahim Mountain was traded across North America, demonstrating the extensive trade networks and connections that existed long before modern transportation. He also shared knowledge about pit houses, traditional fishing sites where ancient netting has been uncovered, and the ways Indigenous peoples lived sustainably on the land for generations.

These fireside conversations provided students with meaningful opportunities to connect with local Indigenous history, culture, and traditional knowledge through storytelling and shared learning. We are grateful to Skip Gregg for sharing his time, experiences, and knowledge with our students and staff.
