Columneetza Junior Secondary
Mr. Sheppard recently invited Whitney Spearing of Sugarcane Archaeology into his classroom as they worked through the Sugarcane Film. His Grade 9 Social Studies students are engaging with residential school history in a structured way — and they asked great questions.
- What are the challenges of filming a documentary about something so personal and painful?
- How does this work make her feel?
- Why do some people who experienced trauma through the Church still choose to maintain a relationship with religion?
Quoting Ms. Spearing: “It was pretty incredible to watch a room full of young people think through history, trauma, faith, responsibility, truth and reconciliation — and to see them comfortable enough to ask difficult questions out loud. That is how learning should work. I’m so grateful to the students and their teacher for inviting me in, and for approaching the conversation with so much curiosity and respect.”
Thank you for visiting our students and engaging in their learning.
