Tatla Lake Elementary/Junior

Earlier this spring, our students were invited to participate in an online session with Ecoplan where they learned about community planning in preparation for their Future Cities Project. They shared their perspectives on what makes our community special and what they hope to see in the future. Building on that experience, students created podcasts and presentations that highlighted the places, activities, and connections they value most in the West Chilcotin.

Students then had the opportunity to participate in a Tatla Resource Association Community Forum, where students shared their podcasts and presentations alongside a school presentation focused on the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District Collective Responsibility Framework. Staff reflected on the many ways community members, organizations, businesses, and volunteers support student learning and well-being from sharing their expertise in our classrooms to supporting recreation opportunities, cultural experiences, mentorship, and community events.

The forum really highlighted the importance and value of student voice. Our students thoughtfully and eloquently shared what they appreciate about living in the Tatla area and their hopes for the future. When young people are invited into community conversations, they gain a sense of ownership and connection, while communities gain valuable insights from the next generation of leaders, workers, volunteers, and citizens!
