100 Mile Elementary

Mrs. Anderson recently embraced the elements—wind, chill, and all—to take advantage of a beautiful, sunny day at Scout Island, engaging in hands-on learning about our local bird species and ecosystems.

Through careful observation and guided exploration, she deepened her understanding of bird identification, learning how to notice patterns, behaviours, and habitat clues. These are the same skills our students use when they slow down, look closely, and begin to make sense of the natural world around them.

This experience is more than a field outing—it reflects our commitment to place-based learning, where the environment becomes the text. By bringing bird identification into the classroom, Mrs. Anderson is creating opportunities for students to build:

Curiosity through noticing and wondering
Mastery by developing observation and classification skills
Connection to the land and local ecosystems
Independence as learners who can explore and inquire on their own

Moments like these remind us that powerful learning doesn’t always happen within four walls. Sometimes, it’s found in the quiet pause of watching a bird take flight, or in the shared excitement of identifying something new together.
