Tatla Lake Elementary/Junior
Our first week back at Tatla Lake Elementary & Jr. Secondary was all about belonging, connection, and creating a school community where everyone feels welcome, safe, and valued.
We started the year by gathering together for a pancake breakfast; a simple but meaningful way to reconnect, welcome new and returning students, and begin the year as a school community.
We also spent time reviewing our Code of Conduct, making sure students understood not only the expectations, but the why behind them. To make the learning engaging, students put their knowledge to the test with a fun school-wide Kahoot! The game gave students an opportunity to revisit important expectations around respect, responsibility, safety, and how we treat one another.
With our intermediate students, we took the conversation a step further by asking: What do we want our school to look like, sound like, and feel like? Students shared their ideas about the kind of environment they want to learn and grow in. We then considered an important question: What can we each do to make that vision a reality?
With our primary students, we focused on social-emotional learning and building positive relationships through stories and discussion. Books such as How to Apologize, The Recess Queen, and This School Year Will Be the Best! provided opportunities to talk about friendship, kindness, empathy, making things right, managing challenges, and the many ways we can contribute to a positive classroom and school community.
Across all of our grades, the message was consistent: We all belong here. We all have a role to play. And together, we can create the kind of school community we want to be part of.
