Columneetza Junior Secondary

Place-based learning uses the local environment and community as the starting point for teaching the objectives of the curriculum. Students from Columneetza and Lake City Secondary recently demonstrated this learning on the annual Salmon Trip. Students worked with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Scout Island Nature Centre, and UNBC's Quesnel River Research Centre over three days. They identified fry, collected samples of scales and bones for DFO research, helped replicate redds for oil spill research, and watched Bev Sellars' documentary, The Spirit Who Swims. All of these hands-on activities connected students to the land and to the intricate and delicate lives of the salmon. Thank you to lead teacher Mark Gill and the multiple departments and organizations that collaborate to foster opportunities like these for cross-curricular learning on the land while building relationships between our schools and community.
