Forest Grove Elementary

Our Primary Division teacher had such a fun and meaningful Pro-D in September!

Beulah Smith introduced her group to an Inuit story called Very Last First Time, which is all about the Inuit practice of harvesting mussels from underneath the ocean ice when the tide goes out. It was an incredible practice to learn about! Each participant received a copy of the book and created a felt story set to go along with it. Now, when our teacher reads the story to our class, she’ll have felt figures representing the setting, characters, and props to help bring the story to life!

Before they started crafting, Beulah read the story to the group and led a discussion about the many ways the book could be used to begin Indigenous-rooted discussions with students. They also explored the benefits of adding sensory elements to storytelling such as sounds, smells, and textures to help students become even more immersed in the story.

Our teacher also volunteered our class to participate in an experiential and outdoor learning initiative that Beulah is piloting this year. Throughout the year, Beulah will visit our class a few times to lead interactive stories and activities, as well as support our teacher with lesson ideas that incorporate experiential learning and outdoor education.

We are very excited at Forest Grove for the hands-on, interactive learning experiences coming our way this year!
