100 Mile Elementary

École 100 Mile Elementary proudly hosted a meaningful Orange Shirt Day gathering, welcoming students and staff from schools throughout the south end of the district to learn, reflect, and connect. We were honoured to welcome Phyllis Webstad, founder of the Orange Shirt Society, who shared her powerful personal story and reminded us of the lasting impacts of residential schools and the importance of the phrase, “Every Child Matters.”

Throughout the day, students engaged in cultural learning experiences and demonstrations led by Indigenous knowledge keepers and community members, including Spirit Carver Dean, local trappers, and drummers. These hands-on opportunities helped deepen students’ understanding and appreciation of Indigenous history, traditions, and ways of knowing.

Orange Shirt Day is an important opportunity to learn from the past while looking forward with hope. By incorporating Indigenous culture, perspectives, and teachings into education, we strengthen understanding, foster respect, and take meaningful steps toward reconciliation. Together, we continue to build relationships and create schools where every child feels valued, respected, and connected.
