Today, for Orange Shirt Day, we sang, we danced, and we spoke our language. While we came together through these meaningful activities, Orange Shirt Day is not a celebration. It is a time to remember, honour, and reflect on the children, families, and communities impacted by residential schools and to recognize the importance of keeping their stories and experiences alive.
We sang, we danced, and we spoke our language, expressions of culture and identity that Indigenous children were once not allowed to share. Everyone who joined us was local, from the Tsq̓éscen̓ First Nation, including Kukpi7 Brent Dixon, who opened our day with a welcome to the territory.
It was especially meaningful for our students to see their peers perform and to watch their own parents sharing their culture alongside them. It was a powerful day of learning, remembering, culture, and connection.
