Tatla Lake Elementary/Junior
Tatla Lake Elementary & Jr. Secondary School is proud to share that our Cross-Country Ski Program has been recognized with a BC Retired Teachers’ Association Golden Star Award!
This program is a wonderful example of collective responsibility and the power of community partnerships. Through the support of the Tatla Lake Ski Club, senior community volunteers, families, and school staff, students have had the opportunity to learn and develop cross-country skiing skills while building meaningful intergenerational connections.
Community volunteers have played an incredible role in the success of the program by helping fit students with equipment, grooming and setting tracks, teaching skiing skills, preparing warming fires at the trails, and even setting tracks on the school field so our youngest learners can practice just outside the school doors. Their generosity, dedication, and care for youth have created opportunities for students to experience healthy, active lifestyles in our rural community.
Each Friday throughout the winter, students travelled to the Martin Lake Recreation Site to ski on the community trails, building confidence, endurance, physical literacy, and a lifelong appreciation for outdoor recreation. The program has also strengthened connections between the school and the wider community, with more families now participating in the Tatla Lake Ski Club’s Sunday ski events.
This award recognizes not only a successful school program, but the strength of a community coming together to support children and youth. We are deeply grateful to the Tatla Lake Ski Club and all of the volunteers whose time, knowledge, and generosity have made this program possible.
