Tatla Lake Elementary/Junior

Our students spent two days at Chilko Lake Lodge on Chilko Lake, learning about salmon and their important role in the ecosystem. As we travelled the shoreline by boat, students had the opportunity to observe salmon spawning, eagles soaring, and the beautiful landscape and terrain of the Tŝilhqot’in territory. We also observed many grizzly bears from the safety of the lodge, connecting our learning to the relationships between salmon, bears, forests, and the wider ecosystem.

Our learning, including Salmon Forest by David Suzuki and the Mystery Science lesson How Does a Bear Feed a Forest?, helped students make sense of what they were seeing around them and understand the interconnectedness of the ecosystem.

We are grateful to Chilko Lake Lodge for providing our students with this opportunity to spend time learning in the Tŝilhqot’in territory and to experience firsthand the places and ecosystems we study.
