Physics 11

Course Description

Physics 11 is an introductory course that focuses on the principles and theories of physics, encourages investigation of physical relationships, and illustrates the relationship between theory and application.  The application of physics to everyday situations is highlighted throughout the course.  Physics 11 is divided into four main sections:  Waves and the Wave Nature of Light, Motion and Forces, Energy and Power, and Modern Physics (Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity and NuclearFission and Fusion).  Mathematics is a strong component of physics and students taking Physics 11 should be comfortable with solving equations and working with word problems. 

Course Outline

  1. Waves and Geometrical Optics Reflection and refraction of light and its wave nature
  2. Kinematics  Describing Motion of objects in one-dimension
  3. Dynamics  (Forces) Understand the nature of  various forces, notably gravity and friction
  4. Newton’s Laws of Motion  Use an understanding of Newton’s Laws to describe the effects of forces on objects
  5. Momentum  Understand momentum and the role it plays in various collisions and explosions 
  6. Energy  Recognize three main forms of energy and be able to perform calculations involving the law of conservation of energy
  7. Special Relativity  Understand and apply the concepts of special relativity
  8. Nuclear Fission and Fusion  Develop a basic understanding of nuclear processes and the operation of a nuclear power station

Evaluation: Each term your mark will be broken down as follows:

Tests and Quizzes – 60%

Assignments: (includes homework, in-class assignments and labs) – 40%   

The final mark will be evaluated as follows:

Term 1 Mark – 40%

Term 2 Mark – 40%

Final Exam – 20%
