Black Hawthorn

BH.jpgBH2.jpg

Black Hawthorn is a thorny tree growing up to 30ft tall. It has many reddish-brown branches and thick, toothed leaves. Its thick flowers form a dense cluster and are followed by blue-black berries. Many birds eat the berries and use the tree for shelter. This tree attracts both birds and butterflies and is host to many larvae including that of the azure butterfly. This plant needs lots of water to grow and prefers wet, damp, soil.
