“LEARNING, GROWING AND BELONGING TOGETHER”
Horsefly is a small school, thus we can involve students in many activities and closely monitor student progress and attendance. Emphasis is on the development of social, emotional and academic skills for positive interpersonal relationships and for positive student attitudes towards learning. Throughout our school there is an atmosphere of easy friendliness and enthusiasm that reminds students they are welcome and that learning is fun. In addition, our school is nestled in the beautiful Central Cariboo known for endless mountain ranges, vast forests, numerous lakes and Horsefly River which has the second largest sockeye salmon run in BC. We have a unique advantage of offering our students access to an appreciation of nature and wildlife.
One of the key strengths of Horsefly Elementary Junior Secondary School is its community spirit. This cannot happen without strong parent support, community volunteers, dedicated teachers, support staff and students. In order for a healthy community to develop, students need to be accountable and responsible. As a community based school, we look forward to partnering with you in the development of these characteristics and your child’s education as a whole. The school is the central piece of the community and is teeming with activity during and after school. Some of the after school program events that both adults and children can participate include; indoor soccer, volleyball, badminton, kick-boxing, fencing, yoga, aerobics/boot camp and drama club.
Some of the attributes of our school that promote a healthy lifestyle within and outside of the school are, but not limited to: involvement in the Healthy Schools Network in which currently we are undertaking a student led inquiry project based on reducing, reusing, recycling and composting, our Farm 2 School program that provides hot lunches to our students once a week with locally produced food in a salad bar/buffet style, our Fruits and Veggies and Breakfast for Learning initiatives that assist in sustaining students with healthy food choices, daily physical education for students in all grades (we are an Action Schools BC school), weekly student achievement celebration assemblies, a vibrant Student Leadership team, and the Rural Secondary On-line program that incorporates the use of technology and platforms such as Moodle and Blackboard Collaborate to deliver English, Math, Social Studies and Science to grade 8, 9 and 10 students throughout the District by expert teachers using current video conferencing, student management and tutorial technology.
If you would like to come and see our school as a visitor to the community or if you are relocating to Horsefly and would like to know more about the school, please contact us at 250-620-3438. We would love to show you our amazing school.
