Inclusive Education Plans

An Inclusive Education Plan (IEP) is a written working document that describes program adaptations and/or modifications, as well as services that are provided for a student with special needs. A student with special needs is described by the Ministry of Education as, “A student who has a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural nature, has a learning disability, or has exceptional gifts or talents.”

As well, non-designated students who receive additional support from someone other than their classroom or subject teacher, (i.e. such as the resource teacher in an elementary or secondary school) for more than 25 hours in a school year will also receive an Individual Education Plan.

The Inclusive Education Plan includes:

  • A summary of the goals and objectives for a student’s learning during a school year. For students with a Ministry Designation it is important that the first goal reflect their designation.
  • A tool to help teachers monitor and communicate student growth over time to parents and staff members.
  • An ongoing record to ensure continuity in student programming.
