SD27 Exceptional Leader Recognized as Canada’s Outstanding Principals

2017.01.31  School District No. 27 (Cariboo-Chilcotin) is pleased to announce that Mr. Michael Franklin, Principal of GROW/Skyline School has been recognized by the Learning Partnership as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals.

“Principals play a pivotal role in the lives of their students.  Mr. Franklin has consistently demonstrated tremendous support for students, and has improved student achievement, through the engagement of staff and community.  Congratulations to Mr. Franklin on becoming one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals.” says Acting Superintendent of Schools, Mark Wintjes.

Principal Rick Miller shared, “When I look over the criteria for this award there isn’t a single area that Mike doesn’t do well, it’s just very difficult to use “inside the box” criteria on someone who is so “outside the box”!”

“Over the past eight years [that I have worked with Mike] Mike has affected a lifelong impression on how students should be treated, and how a school environment can evolve to encourage all students. Mike is a visionary in looking “outside the box” to see what students need to be successful,” Teacher Heather Auger reported.

Dave Dickson, Community Safety Manager, stated, “He [Mr. Franklin] thinks outside the box…he is an outstanding leader and leads by example. He listens to the youth and becomes an advocate for them…”

Former student, Patrick Taylor, remembers Mr. Franklin, “Mike has always been open, honest and kind when helping students, offering them options and paths towards success, always very aware that we each take our own path and come with our own needs and limitations. For many students Skyline is seen as a last chance, however, it is not, it’s a second chance!”

Board Chair, Tanya Guenther commented, “It is an honour to recognize one of our own in this most prestigious award. On behalf of the Board of Education, Congratulations Mr. Franklin!”
